Brooke Brazeau and Milana Perri have been given the inaugural prize, which honours the legacies of Don Gagnon and Kyle Vanderburg in help of “future leaders who share the appreciate of hockey.”
Perri will go to Ontario Tech College in September, researching wellbeing science and then nursing.
“I am honoured to be preferred for the Vanderburg and Gagnon Memorial Award,” she reported. “Hockey has been a large component of my existence and my family’s for as long as I can bear in mind. Don Gagnon was a mentor and pal to me from when I began playing hockey.
“Don retains a unique place in my heart and I will do my finest to make him, his spouse and children and the Vanderburg relatives happy.”
Brazeau will also research nursing this fall, at Sault University.
“I am truly honoured and really grateful to be the receiver of this generous award from the Gagnon and Vanderburg families,” she said.
Both of those recipients will keep on to engage in hockey at the article-secondary stage.
Don Gagnon’s involvement in hockey commenced in 1986, impacting the lives of quite a few kids and people in the hockey neighborhood with his “skill and his devotion” to the game. He died very last August. He was 68.
Kyle Vanderburg, who died in 2020 at 25, experienced the “honour” of coaching along with Gagnon and was a “tremendous” role model to the young athletes he coached and played with.
The once-a-year memorial award, launched previous March by the Gagnon and Vanderburg households, recognizes and offers money to two community athletes pursuing put up-secondary educations.
The two yearly $750 prizes will be granted to learners with a “passion” for hockey, who are entering their initial yr of college or school. Qualified applicants will have participated in a hockey league in the Algoma area and be enrolled in a recognized publish-secondary institution.
