COE Science Instruction professor Chris Schnittka engages artwork neighborhood in “Studio Saturdays”
This summer season, the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Great Artwork on the Auburn College campus has been hosting an exhibition entitled “Crafting The usa.” The exhibit, arranged by the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, characteristics operates in ceramics, fiber, wood, metallic, glass, and other unanticipated products. It offers a diverse tale of American craft from the 1940s to the present.
Supported in portion by a City of Auburn K12 Arts Schooling Grant, “Studio Saturdays” has featured COE Science Instruction professor Christine Schnittka, Ph.D. In these fall-in classes which are cost-free and open up to the community, Schnittka, who in addition to her academic teaching as a scientist and engineer is a an artist operating in watercolors and other media, has available demonstrations and palms-on assignments to examine science and engineering in classic crafts. “The Crafting America exhibit carries the concept of celebrating craft and underrepresented folks building those crafts,” Schnittka explained. “My latest spot of interest is the intersection of science and classic crafts. All participants will be earning looms and weaving strange elements with them from 10 a.m. to midday in the museum atrium.
Christy Barlow, the museum’s faculty and community plans senior manager, reported the workshops have been a massive hit.
“Studio Saturdays have provided readers new insights on the science behind common and unfamiliar artwork elements,” Barlow claimed. “Knowledge of both topics enhance satisfaction and studying. Our purpose has been to build upon this partnership with the College or university of Training and other educational departments via a range of channels, such as K12 educator workshops, college course visits and additional local community engagements.
