She survived the Terrific Mississippi Flood of 1927, opened a single of the Bay Area’s very first Black-owned record outlets in Oakland in 1945 and was named the California Lady of the Yr award in 1995.

But on Saturday, it was the public who celebrated Betty Reid Soskin, 100, the nation’s oldest active park ranger. She had served much more than 15 years at the Rosie the Riveter/WWII Dwelling Entrance National Historic Park in Richmond right before retiring previous thirty day period.
Organizers of the ceremony have been still left scrambling to find seats for hundreds of well wishers who gathered at the Craneway Pavilion following doorway to the park’s Visitor Schooling Centre to honor the Bay Area’s beloved ranger.
Retired National Park Service deputy regional director Martha Lee shared reminiscences of selecting Reid Soskin, recalling how she was to begin with hesitant to don the ranger’s uniform.

Reid Soskin led excursions at the park and museum honoring women who worked in factories for the duration of wartime and shared her possess encounter as a Black girl during the conflict. She labored for the U.S. Air Pressure in 1942 but quit immediately after discovering that “she was used only since her superiors thought she was white,” according to a Park Service biography.
When she was finished speaking, Lee questioned individuals who knew Reid Soskin, like her spouse and children, to stand.
